I KNEW MY WAY TO THE WATSON HOUSE now. Rather than position myself on the sidewalk, where someone inside might see me from a window, I remained under the weeping willow on the corner. I was prepared to spend the whole day there, but the sound of a door opening twenty minutes after I arrived had me jerking my chin up and scanning the walkway of the house.

There, as if I somehow knew she was going to be there—and maybe I did—Bree appeared. She trudged down the sidewalk, let herself out through the gate, and turned in the opposite direction from me. The slope of her shoulders was a dead giveaway that she wasn’t happy.

I followed her.

Bree walked three blocks to a neighborhood park, where she made a beeline for the swings. Her gaze was vacant as she stared at nothing, swinging back and forth at a lazy pace.

I watched her a moment, debating, and then moved to the swing on her right and sat.

“Nice day, huh?” I said, hoping she wouldn’t lose her mind and start screaming about me stalking her.

“I hadn’t really noticed,” she said dully.

I glanced up at the sky. There wasn’t a cloud to be seen. It wasn’t too hot—or too cold for that matter—and the breeze was light and easy. “I can see that,” I lied.

Bree didn’t look up, or at me. “You’re the girl who visited me. You were with Redmond.”

Unlike other people who might have found themselves in my position, I didn’t balk at being called a girl. I wanted people to see me as unassuming. That meant it was always a surprise when I got one over on them later.

“Redmond is a friend of mine,” I confirmed.

She finally looked in my direction. “Is he your boyfriend?” Was she a fan of that possibility? I couldn’t decide. My initial instinct was a resounding no, however.

I shook my head. “He’s dating a friend of mine. Her name is Winter, and she’s really bossy. But he seems to like it.”

“He’s not married?” Bree looked surprisingly hopeful.

“He’s not,” I confirmed, “but he’s too old for you.”

“Haven’t you heard? I’m thirty-five.”

“I don’t think the law sees it that way.”

“Actually, it does.” Now Bree smiled, although it was weak. “The doctor says that I’m fifteen. My Social Security number and birth certificate say something else. My parents are trying to figure out what to do about it. Nobody seems to have any ideas.”

“I can see how that would be difficult,” I admitted.

“Everything is difficult now.”

She sounded so sad it gave me pause. There was something so sad about the way she carried herself that I couldn’t help feeling sorry for her. “Why don’t you tell me what you’re feeling and I’ll see if I can help?” I suggested.

“How can you help me?” Bree looked legitimately curious.

“I can tell you a story.”

She stared at me.

“A little over five years ago, a girl appeared out of nowhere in a Detroit park,” I started. “She had no memory of who she was or where she’d come from.
